courage quotes

First, Some Encouragment

Before I do, though, let me assure you, things always get darker before they get better. What you are seeing in the world right now is the death throes of the old ways. We are moving closer to a new way of being, and if we stand firm in our convictions, we will help to create a better way of life for everyone. So watch carefully, and when you have a chance to offer encouragement, show kindness to someone in need or take action for the greater good – be ready.

For now, here are 10 of my favourite courage quotes and a little bit about why I’m inspired by them.

10 Of My Favourite Courage Quotes

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”

― Lao Tzu

This is one of my favourite courage quotes because it hints that courage takes action. Receiving love gives strength, but the act of giving it requires real bravery. We all know that choosing to love people puts us in a vulnerable position. Therefore, courage requires us to open ourselves up and move past our fear. Courage requires action and working through our fear.

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

― Winston S. Churchill

Everything is fleeting, everything changes. But how you behave, how you hold yourself when the chips are down is what’s truly important. You may step out and bravely start a new business, only to watch it never become successful (I’ve been there) but it’s not the failure that counts. It’s the bravery to start in the first place. And the courage to not be defined by the result, but to learn from it and keep going.

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”

― E.E. Cummings

It’s so much easier to go along with the crowd and do what’s expected of you. But what’s the cost in the long run? Have the courage to express yourself and live a life that is truly yours.

A Courage quote from a corageous woman

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”

― Coco Chanel

This courage quote comes from one of the most courageous women to ever live. Ms Chanel spoke her mind often. She lived her life on her terms, and as a result, she blazed a new path for women all over the world. Where would we be without the courage of this style and business icon?

Having The Courage To Tell Your Own Story

“Bran thought about it. ‘Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?’

‘That is the only time a man can be brave,’ his father told him.”

― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

You can’t have courage without first feeling fear. Courage comes from not letting fear stop you.

“Live the Life of Your Dreams: Be brave enough to live the life of your dreams according to your vision and purpose instead of the expectations and opinions of others.”

― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

“Don’t be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth.”

― Rumi

“It’s your life; you don’t need someone’s permission to live the life you want. Be brave to live from your heart.”

― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

“A man with outward courage dares to die; a man with inner courage dares to live.”

― Lao Tzu

All four of these courage quotes touch on a theme I talk about all the time. Check out this post and this one.

This idea of living a life that is truly yours is what prompted me to create my monthly digital magazine. It’s called Kevala, which is a Sanskrit word meaning pure and simple. It came about after I realised (during Covid-19 lockdown – plenty of time to think) that life could change in a split second. There was never enough time to waste on living in a way that made you unhappy. So I gathered together a diverse group of talented people. All of them living lives that set their hearts on fire and asked them to share their wisdom and inspiration. The result is a beautiful, thought-provoking digital magazine that explores different ways of living. You can find out more here.

“All happiness depends on courage and work.”

― Honoré de Balzac

Can you be happy without meaningful work? I don’t believe so, and I don’t think you can be happy if you don’t dare to go for what you want. Can you imagine what life would be like if you just sat around being scared all the time? Imagine never having the courage to try something new, to create something or to stand up for your convictions.

Courage, abundance and joy

So there you have it, 10 of my favourite courage quotes. I’m so inspired by the courage I’m witnessing in the world that I’ve themed courage as our theme for Kevala in November. It’s a subject that our contributors are familiar with, all of them have shown great courage in pursuing lives that fill their hearts with abundance and joy. If you’re ready for more inspiration, check it out.
