How Routines Can Simplify Your Life

I’m not the worlds most organised person. In my 20’s and early 30’s my life was in a constant state of chaos. I could never find anything, I was always late to appointments, and it seemed I could never get ahead or on top. That was until I discovered how routines can simplify your life. Once I established some helpful routines, I was able to quickly go from chaos to smooth sailing. My life became organised, and I began achieving the goals I set for myself.

If you’re looking for an easy way to simplify your life so that you can free yourself from chaos – this post is for you. In it, I’m sharing the 3 routines I put in place to go from chaos to simplicity.

Calm the chaos in the closet

The first thing I did to go from chaos to simplicity was to look at all the parts of my life that were in disarray. My closet was the worst. I had a bad habit of buying clothes without thinking about how they fit with what I already owned. The result was a wardrobe full of beautiful items that I couldn’t make a decent outfit from.

So my first task was to go through everything in my closet, create any cute outfits from what I had, and then make a list of what I needed to fill in the gaps so I could create a functional wardrobe. Once that was done, I organised my closet into outfits.

Does that sound a little OTT? Maybe, but now I have a time-saving routine that helps me turn up to every appointment on time and looking stylish and professional. Win!

Here’s the routine:

Every Sunday evening I organise my outfits into what I’m wearing Mon-Fri. I check my schedule and identify where I will be and who I am meeting. Each outfit is chosen based on how I need to present for my appointments that day. For example, a meeting with my bank manager will require a more sensible outfit than a lunch date with my photographer. And if I have a yoga class in the afternoon, then I need an outfit that allows for a quick and easy change. I line up each outfit (shoes & correct underwear included) and then I know I’m ready for a smooth-running morning each and every day.

How does this routine help?

  • Eliminates time wasted in the morning with the dreaded question “What am I going to wear today?”
  • Helps me feel confident that I look my best every day. When you look good, you feel good.
  • Saves me money because I’m not regularly buying new clothes.

The Daily To-Do List That Really Works

I do not function without a to-do list. Without one, I get distracted by all the shiny things. Before I established routines to simplify my life, my days were always filled with fun, but I never got the promotion at work or any of my business ideas off the ground.

Here’s the routine I use now:

Every morning I sit at my desk and use Brendan Burchard’s brilliant Day Planner. Then I write my to-do list. I place an A or B next to each thing on my list. The A’s are must do’s, and the B’s are things that if not done today, become tomorrow’s A’s. I also limit my list to no more than 6 items. A never-ending list can become overwhelming and disheartening, you want to feel like you can accomplish every task you set yourself.

How does this routine help?

  • Keeps my mind focussed on what’s important
  • Helps me achieve big goals without feeling overwhelmed
  • Frees up time to do fun things because I’m organised and on top of the essential tasks. Once they’re done, the rest of my day is mine to do as I wish

Simplify Your Food, Simplify Your Life

You know that feeling when lunchtime rolls around, and you’re so hungry, but there’s nothing in the fridge so you either

  1. Go hungry
  2. Eat bread and butter sandwiches until you’re bloated
  3. Order über eats and then immediately regret it because now you’re stuffed & lethargic

Here’s the routine I use to avoid this situation:

Every week I write a menu plan. I try to make dinner dishes that are easy to cook and make enough for leftovers. Those leftovers become lunch for the next day. What could be simpler – 1 cook = 2 meals?

Once I have my menu plan, I order all the ingredients I need online for home delivery. Then every night I make a delicious, healthy dinner and pack the leftovers into Tupperware, ready for lunch the next day.

How this routine helps:

  • I save time and money, knowing what I’m eating.
  • I stay healthy and don’t worry about epic food blowouts and getting stuck eating junk food because there’s nothing to eat in the house.
  • I always feel good and have plenty of energy to get through my day.
  • I don’t worry about putting on weight.
