It’s probably something you’ve never considered; how to simplify your life with essential oils. You may even think that essential oils are only for hippies and “alternative lifestyles.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

I started using essential oils 4 years ago, after being introduced to them through my yoga teacher as a way to soothe my anxiety. I was sceptical at first, but after getting relief from my anxiety symptoms, I began to research how else I could use them. I’m pleased to say that essential oils have simplified my life in so many ways. So, in this blog post, I’m sharing how to simplify your life with essential oils for cleaning.

** Before we start I wanted to let you know that I receive NO payment from any of the products I mention in this post. I simply love to use these products in my home and recommend them wholeheartedly.

Essential Oils For Cleaning

Fewer Chemicals and Less Expense

How many store-bought cleaners do you use to clean your home? Have you ever stopped to think about how many chemicals are in each of those cleaners? And how much do you think you spend each month on those chemical-laden cleaners?

Many of the chemicals in those expensive store-bought cleaners contain hormone disruptors and when rinsed down the bathroom or kitchen sink, pollute our environment and damage our wildlife.

I used to have a bathroom cupboard full of bleach, disinfectant and glass cleaner. My kitchen cleaning cupboard contained dishwashing detergent, dishwasher tablets, disinfectant surface cleaner, caustic oven cleaner. I cleaned my wooden floor with a store-bought floor cleaner, and my laundry detergent was full of chemical nasties.

After researching essential oils, I realised that most of those cleaners were unnecessary. I could use essential oils to simplify my life by eliminating the chemicals that were causing so much damage to my health and the health of our planet.

Essential Oils For Cleaning Your Bathroom

To replace the disinfectant: I use a surface cleaner with 2 cups vinegar, 2 cups water and 20 drops eucalyptus oil, 20 drops lemon oil. I mix them together in a spray bottle and that’s it. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.

To replace the glass cleaner: Norwex cleaning cloth. This cloth is magical. It cleans all of your mirrors and windows, as well as giving a beautiful shine to your tapware and bathroom surfaces without needing any cleaning products. I highly recommend it. I’ve not had to buy a window cleaning product since I invested in this cloth 5 years ago.

I still use bleach in my bathroom, I’ve yet to find a replacement for it, but I live in hope. If you have any suggestions, please leave me a comment.

Essential Oils For Cleaning Your Kitchen

I spend so much time in my kitchen, it really is the heart of our home. So it makes sense that I would want to decrease the amount of health disrupting chemicals I use in that room as much as possible, right?

To replace the disinfectant surface cleaner, I use the same vinegar and essential oil mix as in my bathroom. I mix it up in a spray bottle and use it liberally on all hard surfaces. It cleans, disinfects, effectively lifts any sticky spots left from baking, and leaves a fresh and natural scent.

I use an environmentally friendly dishwashing detergent and dishwasher tabs. My favourite is this brand

And I’ve replaced my caustic oven cleaner with the Norwex oven cleaner. I admit to being sceptical about a low chemical oven cleaner being able to clean my dirty oven, but it works beautifully. And it’s easy to use and doesn’t smell like someone let a chemical bomb off in your house. If like me, you’re sceptical check out this YouTube video.

Essential Oils For Cleaning In Your Laundry

I use the same surface cleaner in my laundry as I do my bathroom and kitchen. Can you believe one chemical-free cleaner can be used for the whole house?

I use a natural laundry powder that I buy from my local waste-free store. It uses lemon myrtle essential oil as its main ingredient, and I have never had cleaner clothes. I swear by it. Check out a waste-free store near your home to see what they have in stock, and if you find anything with lemon myrtle in it, don’t hesitate to purchase.

When I want to clean my washing machine, I simply put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the drum and pop a quick cycle on. It cleans and disinfects the washing machine and leaves a natural clean scent.

And For The Rest Of My Home

For my wooden floors, I use the vinegar surface spray and a cloth mop. I simply spray the floor with the surface spray and then pass the mop over. No buckets, no rinsing. My floors are left clean, disinfected, and streak-free, which anyone who has wooden floors knows is not an easy feat. This surface spray works just as well on tiled floors too. I’ve even used it on carpets as freshener before vacuuming, but before you try this, test in a hidden spot first. Some carpets may not react well, and the last thing you want is to ruin your carpet.

I hope this blogpost has inspired you to simplify your life by cleaning your home with essential oils. You will save money and the health of your family while helping to keep our natural environment safe.
