A Journal Prompt To Help you Make Life Simple

Welcome to the 3rd post in this short series about how to make life simple. I’m a big believer in journaling as a process to create positive change.

In this post, I’m sharing a journal prompt that will help you identify the changes you need to make to make your life simple.

The first steps

The first step in any journey towards is always to identify what you want. Everyone has a different idea of what simple living is. Are you all in for a minimalist lifestyle that borders on monastic? Or are you just wanting something less cluttered and more meaningful? This is your life, and it’s your choice how you wish to live it. So the first step is to decide how you want your life to be. You can read my post on this step here

What do you need?

Once you’ve taken the first step, it’s time to move on to deciding what you need to be happy. What would you need in each area of your life for you to be satisfied living it? After all, a simple life is a life filled with joy. Read my post on this step and the journal prompt to accompany it here.

Grab your journal and answer this question:

The third step to make life simple

Once you’ve identified what a simple life looks like to you and what you need to be happy, then it’s time to start creating it.

Many of us come undone in this step because we rush into it too quickly. Getting excited about creating a new life is great, but the danger of changing too much too fast is that:

  • We make too many changes and then can’t stick to them and fall back into old ways of being
  • We alienate the people around us who can’t keep up with our changes
  • We make massive changes and then find that maybe this wasn’t what we really wanted and then it’s harder to tweak or go back.

That’s why I encourage you to move slowly. To take things one step at a time, allowing small changes that aren’t hugely disruptive to your life and the lives of those around you. Let each new change become embedded in your life before moving on to the next.

Take it slowly and bring people on the journey  with you.

Change can be difficult.

Most of us don’t change our lives because it’s so hard. But you can make the change to a simple life much easier on yourself if you take it slowly and have a plan.

Something like this would work well:

  1. Identify the area of your life that needs changing
  2. Write down what you want to change, why you want to change it and what you wish the area of your life to look like
  3. Make a list of the changes needed to make you happy about his area of your life
  4. Start at the top of the list, making one change at a time

Get comfortable with your changes.

By slowing down and making incremental changes, you can get comfortable with your new simpler life. The slower approach also allows you to tweak things as you go. You may find that a change you thought you wanted doesn’t sit that well with you after all, and by going slowly, you will be able to define what you want as you go.

Bring others along on the journey.

You don’t want to freak out your loved ones or the people around you who you will impact with your life changes. People like your co-workers, your boss, your friends. Many people don’t like change if you move too quickly you take the risk of scaring people out of your life. While that may be a great outcome in some cases, there may be some friends and acquaintances that you want to keep around. Taking the process to change your life slowly will allow the people who are important to you to adjust and accept your new way of living.

Become an inspiration

What our world needs now is more people like you. If you take a slower more considered pace towards creating your new simpler life, you could inspire so many of your friends and family to start on the journey too.

Keep asking the right questions.

Because you’re taking things slowly, you need to keep checking in with yourself. Come back to this question regularly. Every time you make a small change and find yourself happier with your life, ask the question “what small improvement can I make now?” Slowly but surely, you will find yourself living a life that brings you joy in its simplicity.

Don’t stop refining

As you change and grow, the things that make you happy will also change. Keep refining what a simple life looks like to you and allow your life to grow and change and continue to bring you satisfaction and joy.

Let’s make it happen.

I want to take a moment and thank you for reading this post. Covid 19 has turned our world upside down. Still, it has lead many of us to look at our lives and think about the impact we are having on our mental health, our physical health and our world with our fast-paced, consumer lives. Thank you for being one of those people and taking steps towards making things a little simpler.

The process to make life simple is relatively easy.

  1. Identify what a simple life looks like to you
  2. Decide what you need to be happy in life
  3. Take small steps towards creating your simple life.
